Standford delivers VR classes with Oculus Quest 2

A new course offered by Stanford University takes classes entirely in virtual reality using Meta Quest 2 VR headsets. Professor Jeremy Bailenson looks at various aspects of emerging virtual reality technology and how it can be used.

Here is the course description:

Virtual reality is becoming mainstream these days, with over ten million systems in use in the United States alone. The new direction studies virtual reality from the point of view of various disciplines, including popular culture, engineering, behavioral science and communications. Each student will receive an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset, and most of the learning part will take place in virtual reality.

In accordance with the structure of the course, students will be able to independently watch a 360-degree video in virtual reality during the lecture or attend a meditation session in Altspace. Class discussions also take place in VR using Engage.

According to the site, 263 students took the course in 2021 using their own VR headsets and spent 200,000 minutes in VR during the entire course.

The course received particular attention last week when it was mentioned by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his Facebook profile, where he revealed that all students are using Quest 2 VR headsets.

Stanford University has a strong history with VR, and the Stanford VR Experience tour was instrumental in Mark Zuckerberg's decision to acquire Oculus in 2014.
