Unofficial rendering of Meta's next generation headset production model

SadlyItsBradley (the blogger's real name is Bradley) is an XR hardware analyst who has spent quite a bit of time tracking down rumors and information regarding upcoming VR hardware. They recently announced that the upcoming Meta mixed reality headset, currently known as Project Cambria, has reached the "DVT" stage, which means it's almost ready for production.

SadlyItsBradley also claims to have seen actual photos of the production-ready Project Cambria, and while the Meta can't share the photos themselves, they worked with 3D modeler Markus Kane to create the detailed rendering. Below are the renders that came out as a result.

Bradley talked about the array of cameras on the headset, including a quad-sensor pod hidden under the front cover. The capsule contains two cameras and two non-camera sensors, which are speculated to be some sort of depth sensors, he said.

What's particularly notable about the renders is how compact the optics and display body are compared to current VR headsets. If the renders are accurate enough, it confirms that Project Cambria is likely moving to a new optical system over past headsets.

Some of this information and speculation, and even the appearance of the device, was revealed by Meta itself last year. The company said at the time that Project Cambria would include "high-resolution color mixed reality", new optics, eye and face tracking, and controllers that would ditch tracking rings. The company has also confirmed that Project Cambria will launch in 2022, though no further details on a release date or price have been announced.
